In 2011, Timelines sued Facebook for trademark infringement. Timelines.com operates a fairly popular website that allows people to collaborate on creating historical timelines. They had been using several marks such as Timeline and Timelines for a number of years prior to Facebook deciding to start using the mark Timeline on its user pages. Timelines then sued Facebook for trademark infringement.
As can be expected, Facebook raised a litany of arguments as to why it was not infringing Timelines mark. Despite Facebook using the Timelines mark very similar to its use by Timelines, at least some of the arguments that Facebook raised seemed quite strong. Nonetheless, the Court refused to rule in Facebook’s favor without a trial, and Facebook chose to resolve the matter. While the terms were kept confidential, there was very likely a large cash payment from Facebook to Timelines, making this a significant victory against the world’s most powerful social network.
