Xanterra Parks & Resorts has operated concessions in the Grand Canyon for more than 100 years. However, in a move designed to head off the Park Service’s attempt to squeeze more revenue from it, Xanterra is now seeking trademark protection for the iconic lodges that it has operated for decades in the Grand Canyon.
In particular, Xanterra is seeking trademark rights in “Phantom Ranch,” “Angel Lodge,” and “El Tovar.” Visitors to the Grand Canyon know many of these lodges by name, and fondly remember the beautiful views and comforts offered by these lodges. Obtaining trademark rights would allow Xanterra to charge a royalty to any operator that the Park Service awards contracts to if the operator wants to continue using the well known names of the lodges.
